Natural Vitamin K2-7

Vitamin K, discovered by Danish researcher Henrik Dam in 1929, was known to play a critical role in the coagulation cascade by activating various plasma clotting factors. Over the past 20 years, several other Vitamin K (VKD) dependent proteins have been discovered apart from the Vitamin K dependent clotting factors. Recent studies have shown that in addition to their role in carboxylation of coagulation factors, VKD proteins are involved in bone metabolism and the inhibition of arterial calcification. The two VKD proteins extensively studied in this regard are osteocalcin and matrix Gla Protein (MGP), both are present in extra hepatic tissue. In a long term, 4000 subject, Rotterdam population based study; an inverse relationship was demonstrated between dietary intake of menaquinone and aortic calcification and cardiovascular mortality. Subjects with higher dietary intake of menaquinone suffered lower incidences of CVD. Incidence of osteoporosis is lower in eastern Japan where consumption of menaquinone rich diet is higher compared to western Japan. In a 72,000 subject epidemiology study, women showed an inverse relation between Vitamin K intake and the risk of hip fracture. More Vitamin K, less hip fractures!
